What Does the Farmer Eat?

Last week while visiting Julia's Farm she told me about the dining habits of each of the animals. When I asked her what the farmer eats she responded with no hesitation whatsoever, "Pasta"!

Keeping Fuel Mileage Records?

Somewhere in my travels on the internet I ran into this site on which one can keep fuel consumption records and compare them with the records of other drivers. The Grand Caravan has managed 20 mpg so far with records for about a month and a half. Obviously maintaining such records on the internet requires jotting down gas purchases and miles driven and then transferring that information so a bit of time is involved.

All Bundled Up for the Journey

Tomorrow Rebecca of the Netherlands, her mother and I will be off to visit Rebecca's cousins in distant Minnesota. She'll be all bundled up and sleeping (we hope) in her car seat!

Today at the Car Wash

Today I came as close to trucking as I've been in a long time! I stopped at the car wash to get the Copper Country road salt off the Grand Caravan. As I washed I thought about the truck washers at the yard who daily scrub and rub the grub off the tractors. What a job!

Containers

We have all seen those "containers" in trailers going to a destination. I saw on TV a show about them. A factory in China puts out one container every 5 minutes. I think they are then put on ships and transported to Chicago where they are stacked 5 or 10 high into piles of hundreds and there they sit! But not all of them. The pictures show a container ship being unloaded in Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Rebecca of the Netherlands visits the U.P.

All the way from Minneapolis to Hancock, Rebecca was astonished by the endless trees and vast wilderness and began to wonder if they were off course and flying heedlessly to nowhere but finally a bit of civilization appeared and the plane descended onto the runway in Hancock

Here we see Rebecca and her Mother beginning to deplane after landing at Hancock. The two travellers were set to enjoy a snowy visit with plenty of pamering in the Upper Peninsula! Eyes widened as she spied her Grandpa for the first time. He of course was armed with his Cybershot! Later they relaxed at Grandma's place

IM approves contract to cull city deer

By JIM ANDERSON,News Editor

IRON MOUNTAIN — A Wisconsin company will again be called upon to cull the deer herd in the city of Iron Mountain.

The city council on Tuesday approved a contract with Wildlife Management Services Inc. of Hales Corners, Wis., to harvest up to 90 deer.

The contractor will receive $110 per deer culled, the same as a year ago. The total cost to the city will be up to $9,900.

City Manager John Marquart noted that the local Buckmasters chapter will again handle the processing of the venison. The 91 animals harvested last year provided approximately 2,400 pounds of ground venison to area shelters and food pantries.

The harvest by sharpshooters is expected to begin in middle to late January. The deer culled last year were mostly does and fawns, according to Marquart.

Last fall, the council received a petition from 18 residents in the Pine Court neighborhood urging a reduction in the number of deer.

Deer will be harvested this year from various locations in the city
